Kirsten paced back and forth.

At the window to Joe’s study she once again pushed the curtain to one side and looked down the street. Nothing. Well, no red Interceptor, just the usual comings and goings of neighbours and the odd tradesman. She went back and sat bolt upright on one of Joe’s chesterfields. For about two minutes, before pacing yet again to the window for another look.

Dwight Frye paused for a moment outside the door of The Ranyhyn Company office. His mind was still full of the image of the wasted form of Miss Berg. He had not actually entered the office since before Hanne got shot. All the while he had been in the building with Fischer he had remained in the cellar. He reached into his pocket and took out the keypad with which he disarmed the security system. He put the key into the lock and turned it. Immediately he became suspicious.

Silja just stood, closer to the door than the bed. One minute went by, then the second minute. Tuki stood and watched her friend, waiting for an emotional reaction which did not appear. She filled the silence with an outline of what treatment they had given Hanne since she was admitted. Still Silja stood motionless emotionless. Tuki’s description tailed off into silence, she paused before putting her hand on Silja’s shoulder.

Officer Kopkage tapped on the door and pushed it open. The office was bright, not as big as he had expected but still well appointed, functional. The furnishings were simple, to one side a row of filing cabinets stood to attention and to the other, a comfortable sofa took pride of place next to a large window which looked out onto a low stone veranda.

Silja was not driving fast. Not at all. The red Inty grumbled its way along the road to Hope Springs, an unwilling foot hardly touching the throttle. One by one the kilometres crawled by, Silja sat tight lipped, the one hand on the steering wheel showed pale knuckles. She didn’t want to be making this trip but Kirsten had insisted, even giving her the day off to do so. ‘She is your sister after all, Silja.’

Nurse Maisie was just finishing fastening a loose cardigan on Hanne as Dwight and Dr. Troy entered the room. Dwight was initially surprised to see Hanne sitting upright ina wheelchair beside the bed. The last time he saw her she was attached to machines and monitors. The several wires and tubes keeping life going while the medics fought to save her.

Dwight Frye took one final peek over the truncated edge of the bridge then turned away. Walking calmly back to his car he removed his blue serge overall, folded it neatly and placed it in the boot on top of the remnants of the roll of Duct Tape.

He had been waiting all night for this.

Fischer had been watching the clock in Beau’s. He had also been watching with some envy at the bunch in the corner laughing together, playing Pool, and generally having a good time.

Mick Fischer was probably one of the closest people to the pond then the bomb went off. He had been dozing against the wall of the entrance to the Life-net bunker. The shock made him leap to his feet then he found himself gazing at the column of water erupted thirty or forty metres up into the air.

Kirsten.” Joe said, softly smiling, palms held up before him. His supplication did nothing so deflect or reduce the dark brown Oriental fury that was emanating from Kirsten’s eyes. The left hand rose to indicate the lounge door. The right arm lowered a bemused Anneka to the ground. The thin brown lips gave only slightly to issue Anni an instruction.

Go find Silja.”

No No it went… Hast du etwas Zeit für mich, Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich, Von 99 Luftballons, Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont” Meike warbled, then went on to explain. “It was very popular one time, a sort of protest song, everyone sang it at parties!”

Henning prised the wood panel out of it’s frame and set it to one side. He licked his dry lips as he reached into the now revealed recess. His hand closed around the bottle. Well one of them, there were six in the void behind the wall.

Crossing the hall from Joe’s study to the kitchen, Silja’s legs felt like jelly. Maybe it was the brandy, but the time she had just spent with Joe made her think deeply about her situation, a lot.

The thing about a long car journey is that it provides plenty of time to mull things over in the mind.

Silja sat tight lipped in the passenger seat of Joe’s van. She could see Joe’s knuckles showing white even against his pallid skin. She listened to him breathing through his nose, it was slow, regular, but through his nose, audible above the rumble of the van and the odd crashed gear change. Silja rubbed at the chafing left on her wrists by several applications of handcuffs. She was not looking forward to arriving at Chez- Spivey, not one bit.

The three police officers knowledge of Icelandic expletives was expanding exponentially as they hauled Silja out of the van and into the Police Station. The tirade only intensified as they shut the iron door to the cell.

Kirsten’s morning was not going well.

She had started the day in a benevolent mood. Yesterday had been Silja’s day off and she had decided to let Silja sleep late. Silja had come home late and had probably had a nice evening with her friends so Kirsten had seen to breakfast.

Poppa will be so pleased to have you home?’

Hvað í fjandanum er þetta kjaftæði!”

Hanne barely suppressed her truimph, she knew she had her sister on the ropes. Silja was now breathing deeply, open mouthed, not through her nose. Her defiance instantly had been replaced by a wild panic. Hanne always hated not being in control, and she could see her sister was not much different in that respect.

When the doors opened again Silja pressed herself against the bulkhead like a cornered cat, she hissed like one also. She had had time to think. She reasoned that Dwight was under orders not to harm her, but she didn’t trust the lumbering hulk, she was unsure if a bid for freedom was worth the risk.

Scheiße !”

Meike cursed as her shot was nothing like that which she had planned. Silja laughed mockingly.

You have a touch like a train crash !”
