Hyle woke up, gently.

Here eyes remained closed, but her senses filled her mind. She could feel warm sunshine on her body, the gently breeze over her face and hands.

By 09:45 Monika was becoming desperate. The Mayor was late, or was it because she had other business elsewhere. Monika checked Hyle’s appointments diary once again, There was nothing in there indicating any visit or meeting that the Mayor had scheduled ahead of coming into the office that morning. Indeed Miss Troy’s diary was full of office based meetings all morning.

Hyle stood in her knickers before her cavernous wardrobe methodically moving each garment on the rail from left to right.

This is bloody ridiculous. I can’t find a damned thing to wear!” She mumbled.

Hyle was concentrating on her notes, She was aware the door had opened and the sound of high heels did register, but only just.

Miss Troy! So nice to meet you at last.”.

Headmistress Ytte Skovlund arrived then, precisely at 13:30. Hyle welcomed her and bade her take a seat whereby Ytte sat bolt upright almost to attention. Hyle regarded her, Ytte’s face, set to ‘very stern indeed’, thin lipped, breathing slowly through her nose. Very Prussian, Hyle thought.

It was just after 06:00 that morning when Hyle stepped out of the shower. She dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. As she stirred her coffee as it stood next to her ostemad, Hyle automatically started briefing herself on the tasks which lay ahead that day. A day like any other, her mind’s eye pictured her in-tray, self replicating itself daily like a bed of weeds that despite constant trimming seemed to grow with each cycle.

Sigrid Sigurdsson sat patiently, demurely, in the waiting area of the main office of Hope Springs Town Hall. She had of course been there for some time, maybe thirty minutes. But she reasoned that the Mayor was a busy woman with a schedule to keep and that Sigrid’s visit was of course, unscheduled. But time was something that Sigrid was used to taking.

A hot summer afternoon in Hope Springs, one of those days where the humidity is off the scale making even the slightest labour difficult and unappealing. Dogs stretched themselves out in the shade, panting rapidly to dispel heat. The only breeze came from the occasional zephyr stirred up by the slamming early afternoon sunlight.

I miss this.”

Picnics?” Tuki asked, even though her mouth was full pastry.

Sorja smiled. “No, The Waffelhus sunset. It was always a special time of day. Such a calm atmosphere.”

It is pink. I guessed it!” Sorja laughed.

No it is not, It is more red than pink I would say.” Hyle replied. “It is just a matter of how the light hits it.”

The ferocious looking tiger peered out from under the sofa, its meal not far away. It growled, a sort of high pitched growl. But the people of the house did not hear, and the tiger was confident. His next meal was mere centimetres away, he crept forward and pushed his muzzle into the pastry.

Present day….. Shortly after Mid-day,

The low rumbling thunder of low revving four-stroke motorcycle engines grew from out of the distance as they left the main North-South road and turned into Hope Springs.

From any angle, it was plain to see that Sorja was not happy with her sister, not in the slightest. Anyone who passed the side door to The Waffelhus that evening would have been witness to the argument between the two Troy sisters.

The Murder - Finale

Ytte Maria Henriette von Skovlund sat quietly in the headmistress office of Hope Springs school. In front of her on the desk were several piles of paper all relevant to the case of the killing of Margaret Louise Decker. Beside all the police reports and statements she also referred regularly to the notes she had made during the trial.

Amid the general kicking off of shoes and the sighs of relief, after all, high heels were not best suited for the long walk back to Hyle’s house on the compacted dirt roads of Hope Springs, Hyle, Kirsten and Tuki took their places leaning against the table and worktops in Hyle’s kitchen as the room filled with the smell of brewing coffee.

The Murder - A Farewell to Magrat

While Shadow slept, Hyle was sitting at the kitchen table, pen in hand well into the wee hours.

The recent developments at The Constabulary, the arrest of the Stanton boys, the deaf and dumb supper she had just shared with Shadow, all weighed heavily on Hyle’s mind, interfering with the task in hand, namely the speech she was to give at Magrat’s funeral.

Constable Alana headed back towards the constabulary, mentally preparing her report on the conversation she had just finished with young Evan Stanton. She would copy her notes and the boy’s statement up to date over a coffee then place the report on The Chief’s desk. Then.. then she would probably head home for some well earned sleep.

The Murder - Civic Responsibilities

In all fairness, Hyle’s diversion to The Constabulary was a welcome relief. It gave her a moment away from the deeply saddening task of making the arrangements for Magrat’s funeral. To be honest, a bunch of folk having a picnic, or a sit-in or whatever it was supposed to be, was not the item on the top of her agenda.

So it was no small amount of trepidation that Hyle felt as she walked down the slope from her car into Longhands’ north camp.

Hyle looked in the mirror, the bags under her eyes were evidence of a sleepless night. Her mind had been full of the previous day’s events and the fact Shadow had been out all night investigating did not help.

It was around two in the afternoon. Hyle was leaning on the edge of her desk, looking out of her office window. Her office door was closed and the blind was down. She had left explicit instructions with her staff that she was not to be disturbed.

Wesley Drayton had cleared his throat before speaking and felt compelled to clear it again as the cold stare coming from the other side of Mayor Hyle Troy’s desk increased the discomfort he felt. The Head of Accounts for Hope Springs watched as Mayor Troy’s right eyebrow raised. Drayton shuffled in the chair.

Deadlines

It was quite late by the time Hyle got home. It had been a difficult day.

Firstly the promised delivery date for the school chairs was not going to be met by the supplier and it had taken two hours of constant demanding and a certain amount of animated discussion, lots of which were in Danish, and so spared the blushes of the manager at Oglethorpe Carpentry.
