The possibilities are endless

Synn sat in his office.  Life was slow, and he was getting bored.  Abyss was safely stored away in the LifeNet pod he had the Techs re-engineer.  Knowing his little brother was in a virtual dream that was a quiet normal life, was one of the personal goals he was proud of achieving.   Most gangs or major player in the canyon were gone.  Rumors always surfaced of this return or that sighting, but nothing proved valid.

“I gotta get my ass out of this chair and get my boots dirty again.”  Synn muttered to himself.

Götterdämmerung (part 5)

For the second time in her life Tuki found herself alone in a cell. There were differences though. The first time it had been a cold stone room with a forbidding studded door. Shackles had hung from the walls and the mould covered stones were etched in the initials of dozens of previous occupants, along with the obligatory stroke calendars of days ticked off. This cell was not nearly so homey.

Miss Brown glared with teary eyes at the slimy bile sloshing across the bottom of the plastic bucket. Not for the first time she cursed LifeNet, its creators, their parents and anyone else who had anything to do with the fact that she was violently ill whenever she emerged from cloning. But at least she was safe. Well, safe-ish.

Götterdämmerung (part 3)

By four AM the Spivey household was clustered in a little group behind the front door.

“Everybody ready?” Joe asked, hiding his anxiety so that his voice appeared calm and confident. There was a flurry of nodding heads. Joe smiled. “Good. Now remember…” He held his finger to his lips.

Götterdämmerung (part 2)

Joe was enjoying a nice dream for once, then his collar started demanding his attention. Beeps, buzzes, it was even vibrating annoyingly, which was a function he didn’t know it had. Anyway, it was enough to wake him up.

Joe slid out of bed and groped his way to the bathroom.

Zek leaned with is forehead against the wall.  The flow of water from the pipe above him, splashed down the back of his neck, and over him rapidly cooling his body.  He focused on the water flow, and took slow deep breaths.

From behind him, the sounds of groans and movement let him know that the group of students were still tending to each other.  In all only 5 of the students had taken the challenge, 4 were now being bandaged and splinted, as attention was given to broken bones and torn ligaments.

Götterdämmerung (part 1)

There are problems with trying to keep a clone imprisoned. Not least of which is ‘escape by suicide’. Your prisoner dies and is then re-cloned at the nearest cloning facility. The solution, of course, is for the prison to have its own cloning facility so that even if a prisoner does suicide, they still never leave the prison.

The choices we make.

The building stood in the middle of nowhere.  It was a meeting point agreed upon between the Light bringer trainer and Zek.  He stood in the center of the open space, trying to relax.  Knowing what was coming and being in his Full enforcer Armor, was making his hearts race.  Zek chuckled thinking about how point of view was important, as the door opened and the group of students entered listening to their teacher.

And so it begins

Zek stood looking out over Hope Springs.  The upper area of this old car wash was exposed, but the space allowed for quiet reflection.  The teacher over in the LighBearer camp was expecting him soon, but given his request, a little time relaxing was preferred.

Besides Zek’s unique “talents” we what the man desired, so he could wait a bit.

Chez Spivey, just around bedtime

Joe closed his book and stubbed out his cigar.

Time to call it a day, Old son.”

And all through the house,

Joe sighed, put down his book, his brandy, and answered the door.

"Hello Uncle Joe.!"   said Tuki.

"Hello Mr.Spivey." said Taiyoko

"Hej!"  said Hyle.

"What the..... " said Joe. As the others filed past and into the hallway.

Another tap on the door. Joe reopened it.

Finny smiled with her hands clasped behind her back.

Safe Passage

"I told you we should have waited for Momma to take us." Simon whined as he struggled to keep his end of the bundle off of the ground.

His slightly taller sister blew an errent strand of blond hair from her nose as she tried to ease the weight her nine year old brother bore. The large bag filled with toys was not only heavy but cumbersome due to the odd shapes of the contents all crammed into one huge sack the two children had carried between them for a mile and a half already.

The Christmas Tree of Picus Ridge

It was a quite cold evening as Das, Fenster, Brett, stood admiring the Christmas tree like three wise men examining mysteries of the universe.

'It is an impressive tree,' Das said pulling on his red and white scarf. He leaned against the windowsill and almost fell over, quickly remembering they were all outside in the Picus Ridge courtyard, not near a windowsill.

'There is a lot of purple,' Fenster remarked.

'True,' responded Brett. 'We can guess why.'

Suddenly the tree shook a little and spoke. 'Purple is a nice colour for Christmas.'

A Christmas Ghost Story... Well sort of. (part 5 finale)

The New Flagstaff Orphanage Ammunition Company technically does have actual staff. For tax reasons, however, the orphans didn’t count. Officially, they are on an extended work experience programme for which they earn points which are then turned into cash donations for the orphanage. In turn, the orphanage buys its supplies from Spivey’s Independent Trading Company so everything works out nicely.

A Christmas Ghost Story... Well, Sort of (part 4)

Joe opened his eyes and listened. Something had woken him up but there was a distinct lack of ominous sounding bongs. It was also very dark, not a ghostly glow to be seen anywhere. He felt his way to the end of the bed and slid off.

Sunday Morning

The sun was shining.

Too bright

The birds sang

Too loud.

The front door opened,

"MOM!"

Too loud.

"Mom, where are you? I brought Ichiro for you to look after, like we arranged..?

I'm dreaming this... I hope..

BONG! Joe’s eyes opened. BONG! He sat up. Same bed. BONG! Still fully dressed. Joe sighed.

“Here we go again.” Joe shuffled down the mattress until he was sitting on the end of the bed. He reached into his duster pocket for his cigars and opened the pouch. Candy canes.

Tucked up in bed, in the hour before lights out and with the big dictionary by her side, Finny began to read. The sights and sounds, and even the smell, of the orphanage faded away as Finny entered and embraced the world of Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley. Of Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. When the lights went out fifty-nine minutes later, Finny was thrust reluctantly back in the real world.

“Guhhhh…!”

Sunday Morning. Hyle was half asleep, feeling the after effect of another great party. It was the sound of a motor outside and men calling instructions outside that woke her. She wondered what the noise was.

Boredom, is not something kids in the New Flagstaff Orphanage generally suffer from. Staff there know that bored kids get into mischief nine times out of ten. So, if you have nothing to do then the staff will find you something, usually involving a scrubbing brush and a pail of water. Consequently, the kids tended not to hang around the orphanage during their free time.

Kirsten paced back and forth.

At the window to Joe’s study she once again pushed the curtain to one side and looked down the street. Nothing. Well, no red Interceptor, just the usual comings and goings of neighbours and the odd tradesman. She went back and sat bolt upright on one of Joe’s chesterfields. For about two minutes, before pacing yet again to the window for another look.

Dwight Frye paused for a moment outside the door of The Ranyhyn Company office. His mind was still full of the image of the wasted form of Miss Berg. He had not actually entered the office since before Hanne got shot. All the while he had been in the building with Fischer he had remained in the cellar. He reached into his pocket and took out the keypad with which he disarmed the security system. He put the key into the lock and turned it. Immediately he became suspicious.

Silja just stood, closer to the door than the bed. One minute went by, then the second minute. Tuki stood and watched her friend, waiting for an emotional reaction which did not appear. She filled the silence with an outline of what treatment they had given Hanne since she was admitted. Still Silja stood motionless emotionless. Tuki’s description tailed off into silence, she paused before putting her hand on Silja’s shoulder.

Officer Kopkage tapped on the door and pushed it open. The office was bright, not as big as he had expected but still well appointed, functional. The furnishings were simple, to one side a row of filing cabinets stood to attention and to the other, a comfortable sofa took pride of place next to a large window which looked out onto a low stone veranda.
