Let the hammer fall

Outsider HQ, Trader's Flat:

Specialist Johnson knocked on the door and entered the room, where specialists Hopper and Davenport discussed various issues over a glass of whiskey. Hopper looked at his colleague curiously: "Any news?". Johnson raised small dossier: "Report on the incicdent from our investigator just came through. There was a fire set by the garage as a diversion. Whoever did it was smart enough to throw box of ammo in the fire to make it sound like an attack. Furthermore the fire was set by the timed incendiary explosive... that ruled out most of the usual suspects. We also sent whatever remained of the attacker to the lab for tests to see if it sheds any light on the nature of the assailant and i think we hit a Jackpot".

Davenport joined in rather sceptically: "Since when do we care about wastlander conflicts?" but Hopper quickly cut him off: "Five of our men were wounded in the explosion. Not only does it directy affect our assets but it also harms our reputation. If we don't do anything, soon we will have wastelanders having gunfights in front of our HQ, our field teams attacked by scavengers, et cetera... Please continue Johnson".

The young Specialist cleared her throat "Few years back Director Simmons ordered DNA samples be taken from all mercenaries contracted on Outsider business. One of those was woman called "Reavy". Ran a small high-profile mercenary outfit out of sector two, called Wolfpack. When we compared the DNA with the Lifenet database and GlobalTech records, we got a heavily encrypted file designated CX-36951-A from the Globaltech weapons research database. At that point i was transferred from the lab to the field teams so i don't know if we ever got anything out of it. But the nature of the research our department worked on was getting us information on need to know bassis, so i don't even know why were we running DNA samples through the database."

Hopper stared into his table for a moment before looking up at Johnson  "Contact the head of your old department and request the file on this woman"He then turned his attention to Davenport "Assemble a field team. I want her found and brought in, by any means necessary."

Jacobs Ladder (pt 2)

Thankfully the last few hundred metres had been a lot less steep than those that preceded them. Hyle felt the relief in her legs although the constant thick mist had seeped into her clothes, combining with the sweat, making her feel uncomfortable throughout. How much further? She thought.

The lead man walked cautiously forward, peering once again into his screen. To one side than the next, aligning the two dots on the display.

The clouds prepare for battle
In the dark and brooding silence
Bruised and sullen storm clouds
Have the light of day obscured
Looming low and ominous
In twilight premature
Thunder heads are rumbling
In a distant overture... “

A chance to write at last.

Hyle opened her eyes again. The squeezed them shut, again.

Then opened.

The Secret Adventurer's Club Second Adventure (part 17 End)

The previous evening, after Dr. Troy had turned up at the orphanage with the missing inmates, Maisie had put down in the log how Dr. Troy had taken the children for a picnic and simply forgotten the time. It was useful to have someone like Dr. Troy owing you a favour.

It took an effort of will to climb the sandstone steps to the shiny black door. Tukiko hoped Silja would be there, it would be less awkward if Silja was there. Silja, it turned out, wasn’t there. The door opened to Tuki’s knock and revealed Kirsten with little Annie peeping out from behind her legs.

The lengthening shadows of early evening helped Tukiko lead the four adventurers away from the noisy crowd half way up the hill and down into bottom of the valley where the shadows were closer together and darker.

Justin’s lips opened to protest but stopped short of any words coming out. Although this left his face looking like a startled guppy, his rodent brain was working overtime. His head turned towards Finny.

"It's too far!

Canni reached back and lightly flicked the back seat jumper on it's little pink ear.

"Keep on fussin' at me an I'm gonna let you do all the work next time, how 'bout dat?"

Getting no further response she ran full throttle to the end of the roof.

Folding his arms across his chest, Zek stayed where he was and watched the woman struggle with a situation she clearly was uncomfortable with.  He nodded in acceptance to the apology she clearly did not mean.  Listening to her explain the situation it was clear why she called him, and he switched to diplomat mode and just listened.

The fact that Lonely looked away and murmured that she didn’t know made Tukiko immediately suspicious. She looked again at the far away scene and concentrated on it in a way that was becoming more and more comfortable ever since the birth of Ichiro.

An Unexpected Offer

Zek sat at his desk, looking over the letter even though the runner had just left with his reply.   “Cage!” he shouted.

A young lady’s face appeared at the door in response to his shout. “Yeah?” she replied.

“I’m going out.  Looks like we got a high level job that has BOHICA written all over it. So you and the other stay at the ready.  I’ll call if I get FUBAR.”  The young lady nodded and vanished.

Sadie returned a few minutes later with a beer and sat down. She drank and belched and then noticed Finny staring at her.

They had been walking for nearly an hour. Onetooth and Worms had stopped crying long ago and now trudged along without complaining, finally accepting the new situation. Casper stared fixedly at Justin… that was his name… at Justin’s boots thrpp-thrpping through the long grass a metre or so in front of him. Finny walked beside Casper, occasionally trying to catch his eye but failing every time.

Finny scrambled backwards to her feet with the gun pointing all the while at the bear in case it suddenly sprang up again. She backed away two or three metres before recognition of a world that was more than just her and the bear began to return. She stopped and her heart began to slow as normal sound came back and she could feel the throbbing stinging in her hands again.

The journey to the buildings took longer than expected. City kids like them didn’t really have experience in judging distances much beyond the corner of the next block. Consequently it was getting on for noon by the time the adventurers walked slowly up to the hole in the railing topped stone wall that surrounded the whatever it was.

Finny and co. followed the road south west for a few dozen metres. With a last look back at the garage to see if they were being watched, the party crossed the road and set off due south.

We are the,

And we are here to help.

On hearing the familiar shouted command of adult authority the four adventurers immediately went into kid 101 – automatic instant denial. They spun around as one and with all wearing the same look of surprised innocence and the words ‘it wasn’t me’ waiting ready in their throats. Clubs and sticks, and in Finny’s case the elderly long barrelled .45 calibre revolver, disappeared behind backs.

Fortunately, three of the four white furred canines had their heads down busily tearing at something on the ground. The fourth, however, was staring interestedly at the approach desert.

Lack of rainfall over the last couple of weeks had reduced the flow in the sewer’s central trough to a slow meander of thick, smelly, oily water. The slime on the walls, instead of being slick and oozing, now resembled a dried out field of giant brown, elbow scabs which broke away in clouds of dusty organic particles as all four kids paused to draw patterns and crude pictures with their sticks.

Bad day, to worse

Bubba pulled up to Beaus, and shut down the car.  It had been a long day of trying to find the parts he needed to get the Truck he was trying to repair running.  He had the frame and most of the parts, but was missing a transfer case to support the 4 wheel drive.  Everyone he found so far was either rusted through, snapped outright, or the wrong length.  A loud crash and burst of laughter from inside told him that his day was not going to get any better.

So Saturday morning came around. Breakfasts were successfully filched away between slices of bread and stuffed under shirts. Finny left almost immediately and the boys looked at each other still not quite sure if she was joking or not about the gun.

In the ebbing golden glow of the setting sun the four of them sat on the uneven kerb outside the orphanage’s main door idly watching Worms peeling back pieces of cooling tarmac with a stick.

And so it went on for most of the day until everyone started getting tired. Soon, tiredness and the heat started making everyone cranky. By mid-afternoon ‘Attack the Flag’ was losing its appeal and kids started to wander off in search of shade and water. Not long after, the game fizzled out and Finny and co were left to lick their wounds.

There was no way Finny was going to make it to the mound of debris. She was already bloody and her breath burned in her throat as her lungs and heart worked overtime to supply her body with the energy it needed to reach safety. Like Casper, Onetooth and Worms behind her, Finny knew she was going to die, torn apart by bullets coming from the hidden shooters who had ambushed them.

As he gotten close enough he reached to remove attackers helmet, holding the shotgun in half assed stance. At that moment, female voice muffled by what seemed to be extreme pain spoke to him through the helmet mask.

"Stop" she barked at him.

Wiseguy grabbed onto the helmet, trying to pull it up confident his oponent was too wounded to resist.

"Why would i?" he asked with a smirk as his colleague also stared moving up, not liking how the shotgun bearing wiseguy stood between him and the attacker.

"Hammertime" she said as she raised her head up to get on his eyelevel, her voice suddenly calm as she stopped faking the pain...

Little Girl Lost - Worse things

The small yellow motorcycle stalled,

a thick bubbling mass of green, black and brown sludge oozed from the girl into the engine

Trapped, her and the small passenger struggled to separate themselves from the cripped machine

but the sticky foulness held them tight.

Help came, Hyle extended a hand but the putrid blob of goo pulled her in, screaming.
