Valkyrie Handbill/poster

A handbill that can be found in every drinking establishment in S1 and S2 (and specifically The Shots at Pass Chris):

Miss Brown lifted the saddle and blanket off the horse and put them down on the sunlit bench by the window. She used a handfull of straw to wipe away most of the sweat from the horse's back before switching to a rough cloth to finish the job and then a sponge to remove the saddle marks.

The girl had been friendly. Why were they always friendly, always wanted to chat?

Putting the sponge back into the bucket she checked the hooves one by one to make sure he had not picked up any stones.

"... thank you Joseph."

She ended the communication and stood, still as death, looking out of the window. Not seeing the children play or hearing the birds sing but instead the dark of a night long ago and the laughter around the bonfires by the pond.

Phase Two - First steps (part 1)

Titanium is hard to work with. It heats up faster than steel and retains that heat longer, making it easy to overheat in the specific area that is being worked and so risks becoming 'work hardened'. However, titanium has a fairly low modulus of elasticity which gives it a distinctive springiness and this quality is what decided Baka to use it for making the stress-bearing frame of the prosthetic leg.

Phase One - Gathering test data

Baka watched the procedure from behind her surgical mask intently, missing nothing.

The subject she had obtained, a teenage vagrant girl of approximately the right age and build, lay strapped and sedated on the operating table. It was important the subject remained conscious to provide feedback so sedation was kept to an absolute minimum. The right leg had been amputated yesterday to allow time for the blood vessels to close up. Fortunately, with this subject, the femural artery had been successfully closed off without causing an aneurysm.

The Road to Recovery

Baka crawled into bed. Cloning sickness always took her badly. She lay on her side and cuddled the bucket like it was her own child, although she doubted there was anything left in her stomach to come up. To take her mind off the nausea and the feverish sweats she thought about what had been achieved by her rather reckless decision to visit the girl.

Build Your Own Radio Station, 101

Baka drove south, unaware that her now automatic habit of never going home in a straight line had successfully thrown off the person attempting to follow her. Lohengrin blared on the carefully rebuilt music player. This particular piece of Wagner's she thought of  as 'music to think to'.

The Last Few Ticks Of The Clock

The reunion had been emotional. Perhaps more so for Joe who had almost come to accept the loss. He had lost her before, he knew how it went.

But the emotional display was only that allowed by the boundaries of their relationship. They had hugged, awkwardly. Joe had made two cups of tea and then had sat at the table and listened while Baka, nesting like a bird within her armchair, cupping her mug of tea in her hands, told her story.

Nightmares... are made of this

She woke up. Before opening her eyes the smell warned her that it wasn't going to be pleasant. A tiny, nagging memory recognised that smell but before it could come scooting up the tunnel from the darkness to be acknowledged she slamed the trapdoor shut. Her imagination hearing it howl as it fell back down to rejoin its Mistress.

Baka sat in the tatty three legged armchair, her head turned sideways to see out of the dirty window, her fingers tapping lightly on the threadbare arm of the ancient chair. Two small children, maybe six or seven years old were teasing a dog by passing a ball between them as the dog ran from one to the other. It's tongue lolled from the side of it's mouth as the dog bounded hither and thither, following the ball in it's arc from one laughing urchin to the other. It seemed every bit as happy as they were.

She had never thought about Joe having an apartment. She had never thought of Joe living... anywhere. She had certainly never thought that he could cook.

By the pricking of my thumbs...

She sat in a diner sipping coffee. Not caring how out of place her attire appeared to the locals, she stared out of the broken window at the similar incongruity that was her car, parked all by itself among so many horses. Funny, she thought, how this almost ruined little town had once appeared so large and imposing.

Night of the Hunter

((This is long. Very long. It is long because it was written by two people. It is all under my name, well, to protect the guilty. Appologies to the NFPD for using their station with asking. I did try to get in touch ingame, but as in real life there is never a policeman around when you need one. :P))

Police Report, Serenity Falls

((This is the police report as submitted to Weyier by officer Bolin Deace))

At approximately 09.30 hours, Miss Dreiundswanzig was sitting on the top of the police station steps in accordance with instructions from Mr Weyier that she should have limited freedom of movement as long as she was kept under observation. As Miss Dreiunswanzig was in my view at all times I saw no reason to deny her request to 'get some fresh air'.

Dear Diary: Waiting

She's out there, now. Somewhere.

She's going to destroy me, and then kill Scott just for the hell of it, and neither of us know what to do to stop her.

But Scott's not telling me something, I know he isn't... why isn't he? He keeps saying that everything will be all right, but how can it be?

I don't think I'm going to be much use to him anyway, my 'get up and go' seems to have got up and gone lately.

What is she waiting for? Why doesn't she just do it?

Dear Diary: What day is it?

I've not been feeling to good, which is kind of a bummer considering i'm supposed to be so goddam healthy.

I think what kicked it off was a bad trip through the machine a few days ago. My skin felt like it was on fire and man did I throw up! (Kinda feel sorry for whoever came through next.) Had to sit down for a bit after that and get my strength back. Since then I just feel sorta tired all the time and every time i go through the machine again it just gets worse. And I'm forgetting things. I've spent chips, but can't remember what on. And i've been making stuff like crazy... I know I made some stuff for Shil, but I've used so many mats out of my stock and I just can't remember what I did with them. Oh and worst of all... The gun Scott made for me, it's gone.

Dear Diary: Maybe.

Love is like a butterfly
As soft and gentle as a sigh
The multicolored moods of love are like its satin wings
Love makes your heart feel strange inside
It flutters like soft wings in flight
Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing

I feel it when you're with me
It happens when you kiss me
That rare and gentle feeling that I feel inside
Your touch is soft and gentle
Your kiss is warm and tender
Whenever I am with you I think of butterflies

Your laughter brings me sunshine
Everyday is spring time
And I am only happy when you are by my side
How precious is this love we share
How very precious, sweet and rare
Together we belong like daffodils and butterflies

Dear Diary: Up is down and black is white.

I should be miles from here. I should be camped under the stars. I should be a good few more chips richer than I am now. But i'm non of those things. Instead I'm bedding down in another draughty old derelict on the outskirts of town and do ya wanna know why Diary... do ya? Well hold on to ya pages coz I'm gonna tell you and you are not going to believe it.

Two guys got into a 'discussion' about how one of the guys was treating, or mistreating depending on your viewpoint, his current and ex girlfriends. I thought... there's gonna be bloodshed here. Especially as the guy with the two lady friends was one of these big barrel-chested 'look at me sideways and you die' types. The other guy... maybe not so much, but those weren't water pistols he was packing.

Dear Diary: Thinking time.

This is the last night of a two day expedition up around Blaine and down as far as 'as close as i can get to Hollister without getting my ass shot off'. Two days without seeing Scott (oooooh I miss him) and without seeing much of anyone else either. But the saddlebags are full and it's time to head on in to Flag first thing in the morning.

One good thing about being out here all on your lonesome though is that it gives you time to think, and I've been doing a lot of that... stringing random thoughts together untill some kind of sense emerges. So here I am, huddled in front of a good fire with a full belly and a smelly old horse blanket around my shoulders trying to put it all down on paper before sleep blows it all outta my head.

Dear Diary: I've had a wonderfull few days!

Oh dear Diary I've neglected you for the last few days and I'm soooooooo sorry. But we'll put that right now.

Ok then. There have been more ups than downs. Yay, let's hear it for the ups! But there have been a couple of downs and they've both revolved around one person Shiu... yes I asked around and found out her name, and I KNEW I'd met her before, well, maybe not MET met, but been introduced to anyway. What is it with her? For a couple of days she had this 'menacing stare' thing going every time our paths crossed. Maybe she was just trying to drive a point home or something. Ok, ok, I GET it! Now go back to drowning kittens or whatever it is you do for fun. So anyway the plan is to ignore her (as much as possible) and hope she finds some other victim to play with... soon!

Okay, calmed down again now so... on with the good stuff!

Dear Diary: Sleepy sleepy sleep sleep

Sorry Diary, I can't write now... I might wake Scott up.

Lots to tell you in the morning.

Nite nite.

Dear Diary: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

That's the opening line from 'A Tale of Two Cities'... How in hell do I know that?! Seriously, I've been having some pretty strange thoughts in my noggin lately.

Anyway, it doesn't quite fit the last couple of days because it should be the other way around. The bad shit happened first.

Not that I want to dwell on it but it freaked me out... so in the Diary it goes.

Dear Diary: Books, Frogs... and Scott

Ok, ok, so I'm still grinning like a loon but I'll get to that in a minute. First things first, let's do this properly.

I am no brainiac... I think the whole world knows that by now. Well, today I proved it once again. I went to that book archivey place in Flag and borrowed a whole load of books. Had to leave my bike there as assurance, but anyway they let me. Then I sat myself down by the water in the courtyard and started to read. I think I understood ooooooooh, maybe one word in five. Some of them had so many syllables in them I couldn't even get my head around them never mind my tongue! And the diagrams and the formulas... gobbledeegook all of it. But, I gave it my best shot, trouble is my best shot missed. So now I'm flumuxed.

Dear Diary: Look, no drama!

Well, here we are, snug as a bug for another night.

Not a bad day scaving. I was going to do three trips today but I ran into Sunny at Hope Springs so we went back to Flag and blew the afternoon exploring the empty houses. That's how I found this place. I asked sunny about the university and he showed me, and also showed me a great little library which is just what I need. Anyway, back to the scaving. Last Stop was a bit dissapointing, too much work for too little gain so i won't be going back there for a while. More luck up around Prospect, I thought I'd scaved the place out but I found a good patch just to the west. There were a couple of Yaahoos there but they were more interested in blasting the local wildlife, which helped me out no end! Kept an eye on them though, just in case.
