That looks tasty. That looks plenty. This is hungry work.

Midway, sunset

I could think of a better way to spend my day than to be out on the rooftops tracking a rogue clone. Perched high above I have a clear view over the main street where pitiful clones with a speck of synthetic soul run about, half naked, with guns aimed high. Better stay out of their volatile reach. I already had to pistol whip a nosy clone in Boneclaw, but then I had to make myself scarce before the machine spit him out again. Most of them will not survive for more than a day or two. I wonder how the locals in these towns keep up with them? I wouldn't last a day in here without unloading a truckload of irradiated dirt over the LifeNet bunker.

But I didn't come here looking for real estate, I came here to find one particular clone. Canni. A child-sized clone destined to save the world and all the other things LifeNet poured into her head. She did the job right though, flawless in fact, but I had to come and look for her after the job was done and make sure she didn't end all messed up. Not that I can or want to fix anything, not my problem, but better to cut the problem early on.

Finding one clone in a sea of others is hard even for a trained eye. It didn't take long to see that I was not alone on the rooftops of Midway and that trouble always follows little Canni. Find the trouble, and she will be right there in the center, looking back at you like a feral child unsure what's going on.

Anyway, we managed to get out of Midway with just some minor injuries. What amazed me, though, is that she looked at me as some kind of savior, a big brother of sorts. It didn't feel right.

Later on, halfway between Odenville and some other forsaken town we found some peace and I could diagnose her predicament. She wasn't interested in the signal and the recording and anything that happened and where she contributed. That was good news. But she wanted to know why her eyesight is so... normal, why her teeth were so dull and why she can't aim properly. After who knows how many years she was experiencing a withdrawal of sorts. No superpowers, no mutations, no jumping or landing from buildings, nothing. Just good, plain human issue clone. It must feel terrible to feel such loss but... fuck 'em. They took everything for granted, the clones.

I couldn't get rid of her though. Not because I felt some kind of obligation or anything, I am not really into that, but there was something else that I couldn't quite explain to myself. A strange vulnerability uncommon for a fresh clone. Anyway we struck a simple deal. I will escort her to Oilville and then we go our separate ways.

A story old as time, a brute and a little child on a perilous voyage. Those stories always have an ending where the brute dies protecting the youth, hope and whatever. That's why nobody watches that kind of movies. But paths are made for walking, and Oilville is a town I love and I am passing through anyway. I'm gonna walk this path, deliver her there and then I'll be gone north, to break into Post 23 and wrap all of this up.

((My kind of atmosphere! :D

It is interesting to spectate the clones from Engel's point of view, you almost get the feeling he does not consider himself one.
Perhaps it is simply because even among clones, there is an unsaid heirarchy. Those who look down on those 'lesser' than themselves :)
A typical human trait :D ... Or now that I think about it, perhaps it is just a basic trait among all living things.

Anyway, again, I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this post.
Interesting characters and story.

(( Yes, hence the symbol of Engel perched high, watching over "lesser" clones at the start of the story. He does look down on them, but then again, he shares only some of the benefits and pitfalls of a regular clone life so he can despise or envy them as much as any regular human. ))

((It's refreshing to portray different sides of Canni's DNA... I am really enjoying the interaction between the two and the unknown roads.

One minute your calm, the next your shooting someone in the face, then your doing your chickendance. If that is not chaos I dont know what is - Aiid

(( Can I come a bit earlier for that drink? I can even play some music before Reaper's flask starts. Reaper plays awesome music btw - I managed to catch some of his shows, it's just too late, or early, for my current location. ))
