Not like this...

Engel's picture
Submission type:

When he was a kid, he dreamed of apocalypse.

No laws but the law of the strongest. Total, frightening freedom. And it could be romantic too. Blasting over windswept roads with a good, unconcerned soul by his side, a pack of hungry, rabid dogs barking and chasing his car and an old record of Lana Del Rey weeping from the stereo. In this dream, everywhere he looked there would be nothing. And there would be nowhere to go. There is no better or worse place hiding over the hill. That is the true apocalypse, a huge steamroller flattening everything down.

When he was a kid, he dreamed of being this rugged, brave, defiant survivor. Maybe a sawed off shotgun or a nasty silver revolver with a few notches on the grip. He would take no shit in this dog-eat-dog world. Hell, he would even eat dogs if necessary. And yet he would be one of the good guys. A true anti-hero, never succumbing to the animal side in him.

He would kiss every willing girl and save his loyalty for none. He would live the moment. The last moment of Earth.

But not like this...

This is not what he dreamed of.

His dreams were just that. Dreams.

Now he is living in a trashed bus, scrapping barely enough wood and junk to fight the cold night wind. There is no girl by his side, and he had to eat his loyal pet dog. His teeth are gone. He once owned a silver revolver but he lost it, together with his hand to an alien, godly race of dim-witted clones hunting what's left of humans. And even their numbers are thinning down, a natural predator/prey balance.

Every day is a struggle, and not a romantic one when you're a cripple.

Now, when he goes to sleep, he dreams of a better place.

((Now that's the apocalypse. It would make an interesting game, surviving against the god-like clones while trying to scavenge a set of false teeth that fit. I'd join the kickstarter for that one.

Stick with me kid and you'll be farting through silk.

((The fate of your loyal dog was heartbreaking. I imagine it wagged the tail with excitement when you called to him, holding the knife behind your back and the tears in your eyes. Some angels have a destiny to fall it seem. A cruel world making us cruel to survive.

((I'm trying to picture Engel as a kid... Hmm. Funny :)

Very nice entry. Thanks for sharing.

(( #grim tales is a series with a special mood. Sometimes, Engel is not the protagonist at all. I think this story is not about him, but some survivor. Engel is 'apocalypse born' - a true child that never was one. ))

(( "Dreams of a better place" Life can take everthing else away from you .. except that.

One minute your calm, the next your shooting someone in the face, then your doing your chickendance. If that is not chaos I dont know what is - Aiid
