Little Girl Lost-Renewal

The night sky was still dark, moments away from the very first spash of color upon the horizon when the waif opened her eyes from a restless dream filled sleep on her favorite ledge overlooking the vaults. Scanning the area she found a small area of dead grass, black from fire and yellowed by urine.

The small group of CHOTA assigned to watch her, all with primal mutations, impossible to ditch and loyal to the Old One were gone.

Canni was relieved but hoped the locals would remember what happened when someone messed with the orphans, smiling to herself as she remembered the spunky one that emerged from the sewer. At times she even envied the little one-lifers, sure they faced a true death and hardships, but they had each other and if they were lucky... got to grow up.

After climbing down, an empty belly made her wish they had not left, taking the delicious smell of roasting meat with them. A freckle dotted nose lifted, hoping to catch a whiff of something edible but found only ashes. The smell of ashes was one of her earliest memories, it seemed everything became ashes eventually, then was gone.

Wandering over to where the campfire had been, she reached down to feel for warmth but the spot was cold, they had left hours ago. The girl brushed the fine grey soot with the side of her hand to make a smooth place in which to write her name. It was much easier now, her hand was steady, head was clear and she no longer feared to be out in the open because her legs were once again strong enough to outrun most people.

The little clone was no longer sick and diseased, knowing it was because she had been sent back to lifenet. She remembered waiting till her caregivers were distracted and crawling away to hide from them. Someone else found her though, the Old One greeted her with a tender smile and a bullet between her eyes. It took a good amount of time before she was sent back out to the wastelands with a fresh new body.

Canni looked down at her name and saw that the little dot above the i was a speck of green instead of a finger imprint and lowered her face for a closer look. It was a small bud of grass growing from the burned area, the grass here always grew back no matter what happened to it.

Never truly dying, always surviving by way of renewal.

Just like herself.
