The girl unfolded the piece of paper and spread it out on the counter in front of the metalworker.

And what in all tarnation is that?” The metal worker’s eyes screwed up a little as he scanned the line of stick-like shapes on the paper.

Issa notta your worrying what iss saying. Jus’ be scratching the shapes onna dis ring eggsakkerly likka is writ, right there hmm?” and after a while… “Please.” The girl put an adult size silver ring onto the counter beside the paper. It was wide enough to take the inscription, but not so wide as to look wrong on a female finger.

Look Missy.. I aint gonna be fussin’ around…...”

The metalworker stopped short as a generous bag of chips took it place next to the ring and the piece of paper.

I pay good. Spiveyjoe say you issa good craftermann.” A grin spread across the face of the young girl. From under a parting of gold hair, two glacier eyes creased with the smile “You know Spiveyjoe hmm? Him anna me issa liker thiss.” She showed the man crossed fingers. “Issa me onna top.” One of the blue eyes winked and the smile widened as she pointed to the uppermost crossed finger.

It took the metalwork shopkeeper a few moments to disassemble the word Spiveyjoe. But when he did, his demeanour towards the teenager changed somewhat. The iceberg blue eyes held him.

Err. Maybe I can squeeze your order in somewhere.” Came the considered reply. Like a lot of craftsmen in the locale, his skills were often called upon by Joe Spivey. But business with Joe came with complications and somehow, despite Spivey being the customer, the crafter always ended up being indebted to Joe somehow. And that debt carried some implied threat. Ergo it was always more beneficial to keep in Spivey’s good books. At the end of the day there was only one pertinent question.

How soon do you need it?”

Inna Mornings...” The girl chirped as she turned and headed for the door brimming with teenage self assuredness.

The man called after her. “Err, Miss. What name should I put on the order?”

Oh, yes! Henningsdottir H-E-N-N-I-N-G-S-D-O-T-T-I-R.”

The man started to scribble the name then gave up. But his curiosity got the better of him.

These stick things. Do they mean anything?”

Means: Hvað fer í kring kemur í kring.”

None the wiser, he just shook his head as the shop door closed behind the girl.

We're paying her far too much if she can afford engraved silver rings.

Stick with me kid and you'll be farting through silk.

Joe !   I pay SIlja . Now you look after your own business. What happens in MY household is MY business. Clear?
