A hot summer afternoon in Hope Springs, one of those days where the humidity is off the scale making even the slightest labour difficult and unappealing. Dogs stretched themselves out in the shade, panting rapidly to dispel heat. The only breeze came from the occasional zephyr stirred up by the slamming early afternoon sunlight.

It was the sound of the car that drew Sergeant Sweetley away from his desk to the opened door of the Constabulary, he watched with half hearted curiosity as the car passed and drew up outside The Waffelhus. It was yellow, one of the few armoured taxi’s that were available in New Flagstaff. ‘Safe to your destination or a full refund.’ was their slogan, which always made Sweetley laugh. Dead folk usually do not need a refund.

What did draw Constable Sweetley’s attention though, came as the taxi door opened and a pair of long toned legs who’s feet bore the most unfeasible long heeled pair of shoes pivoted from the vehicle, soon followed but the rest of her, gracefully rising to a stand.

And a good afternoon to you, Miss.” Sweetley muttered under his breath as the woman paid the taxi, straightened up and carefully smoothed the red silk fabric of her dress before pausing to take in her surroundings. Which was when she saw Sweetley looking at her. She returned his gaze with a smile before dipping down elegantly, back straight and knees together to pick up the case at her feet.

As she made her way towards him, Sweetley was nothing short of captivated. This one was nothing short of stunning. This woman even outclassed Mayor Troy on one of her more glamorous parties. As this woman came closer and the near non-existent breeze teased the light fabric away from her body. Sergeant Sweetley realised his mouth was hanging open. He closed it quickly before she got close enough to notice.

The heels clicked up the few steps to the Constabulary porch.

Good afternoon, Constable…?” She said.

It’s Sergeant. Ma’am. Sergeant Sweetley.” Sweetly found the words were stuck in his dry through. He coughed behind his hand, lubricating his voice. “How can I help you?”

I was wondering if you would be so kind as to tell me where I could find Mayor Troy.”

Mayor Troy will probably be at the Town Hall. It is…” As Sweetley raised his arm to point, he stopped himself. “ I was just heading that way.. ermm, in any case. I can show you there.. escort.. like.. umm.” Sweetley figured it was worth braving the intense heat long enough to fill his eyes and memory with this vision clad in not much red silk. ‘It’s a tough job’ he reasoned to himself.

You so kind.” The voice sang in his ears. “Thank you so much.”

The smile was enough to melt even Sweetley’s time hardened heart. But better maybe not to mention this to his good lady after work. No, police work is confidential, after all.

As the two walked briskly along Hope Springs main street. Sergeant sweetly carried out his duty diligently, trying not to stare too much as the breeze played teasing games with the red silk and skin walking along next to him.
